Chapter Sixteen

Thursday

Judith’s hands were sweating. Why the heck was she so nervous? She was calling Asher to confirm the interview time. He’d said he’d do this. It wasn’t life changing or earth shattering. Just a phone call.

She took a deep breath, tried to focus, and called the number Asher had given her.

One ring. Two rings.

“Hello?”

“Hi,” she said, trying to get past the fact he sounded distant. “It’s Judith. Is now a good time to meet with Shim?”

There was a long pause on the other end. Hopefully she wasn’t overstepping, even if he’d agreed on the date. “I mean, if now isn’t a good time, I’ll call back later and we can figure out the details.”

“Judith?”

There was a bit of command in his question. “Sorry,” she said. “I’m here.”

“Good,” he replied. “Do you two want to meet me somewhere?”

“I’m about to leave to get Shim,” she said. “Let’s meet somewhere we could have privacy.”

He laughed. “How about you bring him over to my house; we’ll hang out, have dinner?”

Hopefully she hadn’t been too transparent. By privacy, she’d meant something he could control, and it would be as convenient as possible to have the whole thing take place at his house. Even better that he’d suggested it. “Sounds good,” she said, as if it hadn’t been her plan all along. “I’ll see you in an hour?”

“Looking forward to it.”

And as she ended the call, she realized that she was, too.

Despite his excitement that Judith was bringing Shim for the interview, Ash came to the unfortunate realization that his house was an absolute mess, and he had an hour to clean it up. He started the laundry, cleaned the downstairs bathroom, and as he was starting to organize the kitchen when he heard the alarm deactivating and the door opening.

“You look like you’re in the middle of a whirlwind,” Jason said with a laugh. “What’s going on?”

“Everything,” Ash replied, trying to figure out what to say. “I’ve got company coming in less than an hour and…”

“Who is it?”

He paused. “The woman from the park.”

“The one Steven saw you with?”

“You talked to Steven?”

“Just because I don’t want to work with my brother doesn’t mean I don’t talk to him,” he said with a laugh. “But back to the subject at hand. She’s coming over in less than an hour for what?”

“She’s bringing her nephew. He’s seven and on that team I’m helping to coach.”

“Interesting. Practice downstairs?”

“May take him downstairs, get a few shots in, but he’s coming to interview me for a school project.”

“And probably with an interview long enough where dinner is necessary?”

“Possibly.”

“I’ll make pizza and clear the kitchen, then hang out afterward.”

“Would you?”

“I got it covered.”

“Thank you,” Asher said. “Really.” Which was when he realized he had about a half an hour to finish cleaning, so he headed upstairs and hoped he’d be ready on time.

Ash came downstairs after showering to discover Judith sitting on his couch with a cup of coffee and excited chatter coming from the kitchen.

It was comforting to see her settled on his couch but saying that at this stage probably wasn’t the best of ideas.
